2017 Roundup Spirit Award

Bob & Karen Garcia

For 20 years Bob and Karen Garcia have volunteered their time, talent, energy and resources to the Roundup for Autism. They've always willing to help in every way on any event. Over the years, Bob and Karen have been in charge of selling Rodeo box seats (when we had our rodeo in the Fort Worth Stockyards), working behind the scenes at the Rodeo, selling programs and t-shirts, collecting donations, checking in sorting contestants, and keeping score for the two-day sorting events, to name a few.

After a long hard night of work on the rodeo, Bob & Karen are always front and center in the ballroom assisting with auction setup, décor, and production for Pegasus Ball. Bob's strong, deep voice became the iconic "Voice of God" we record on site each year, welcoming patrons to the Ball and asking them to take their seats for dinner.

Bob and Karen have a strong love for the children and adults at the Autism Treatment Centers, as they have known them since they were young children and watched them grow into adults that now flourish in the community. They didn't have anyone in their family with the developmental disorder until 9-1/2 years ago when they received the news in 2008 that their Grandson Lucas had been diagnosed with Autism at the age of five.

Lucas started receiving services at the Fort Worth Autism Treatment Center at age six and is now able to attend public school, a milestone that would not have been achieved had he not had the treatments and therapies that ATC provides. Is it ironic that the Garcia's volunteered for 10 years for a cause they had no personal ties to until Lucas's diagnoses? The answer is no. 1 in 68 children is diagnosed on the autism spectrum and the numbers continue to increase.

It's volunteers like Bob and Karen that bring us to our 29th annual Roundup for Autism and friendships such as these that foster the achievements we have made in helping ATC. So thank you Bob and Karen for your years of service, dedication, friendship and support, you're a part of our family and we love having you on our team!

We thank Bob & Karen for their tireless work and friendship.
